On the East Side, we are fortunate to have so many well-preserved antique homes. In fact, 50 years ago, Providence took the lead in restoring rundown historic neighborhoods, this at a time when the standard procedure was to bulldoze and build new. It was called "urban renewal", or "urban removal" as some preservationists pun. Can you imagine the East Side of Providence full of 1960 vintage houses! I know that I wouldn't be enjoying life here on the East Side if not for the foresight of these early advocates of a better solution for our historic homes and neighborhoods. They put their efforts into restoring, rather than discarding old Providence. They succeeded, and we are still benefiting.
